    Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) describes a group of procedures used during surgery to monitor neural pathways during high-risk neurosurgical, orthopedic, peripheral nerve, and vascular surgeries.

    These procedures assist surgeons in preventing damage and preserving functionality of the nervous system.

    Benefits of electrophysiologic monitoring include the ability to alert the surgeon and anaesthesiologist to the potential of possible injury and to allow modification of the surgical procedure in a timeframe where it is possible to prevent or minimise potential permanent damage.

    Neuromonitoring can also be used to map areas of the nervous system in order to form a guide for procedural management.

    Neuromonitoring can include the recording of spontaneous activity (eg, electroencephalogram and spontaneous electromyogram) or evoked response to stimulus (eg, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, triggered electromyography, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials).
